Dental problems.

I'm having a few dental problems. Owie. It could be that I'm sick, but I've got one side of my mouth I can't eat on. I don't find tooth problems to be as distracting as I once did, but it's still kinda irritating. Sometimes it hurts when I'm not even eating, which is odd anyway. And it's very temperature sensitive.

Soup is a traditional sick-person food, but you can't eat it if your teeth hurt; you can't eat soup on one side. My traditional drink order is a glass of hot water and a glass of ice cubes, so I can mix it to the painless lukewarm temperature.

Did I mention that my dentist is on vacation this week?

Friend in town!

My friend Clint was in town from Vermont today, and I'm glad we had a chance to see each other. I'm working long days the next three days, and the last few days have been holiday stuff. He's one of my favorite people to talk to--he's intelligent, thoughtful, and probably more creative than he realizes. And very well-read. A good number of my favorite books and authors were his recommendations. A good guy, and a good friend. And, unfortunately, we almost never see each other. But we trade good e-mails, and we stay in touch when we can. Clint--safe travels, and keep in touch!

I just decided that Laura and I have warped priorities. We're both feeling a little under the weather. We've both said, over the past few days, that it'd be great if we could put off getting sick until we're done with our shows and events. We're saying, in effect, that we're really hoping we can get sick while we're on vacation. What's wrong with us?!?

We just got the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD. Woo Hoo! Laura and I really enjoy watching Buffy and Angel, and we're hoping we get a chance to watch the whole season over the Christmas holiday. Unfortunately, we won't get a chance until then--our work schedule is so busy that we don't really have any free evenings at the same time until Christmas week. So do us a favor, and don't tell us what happens!

And, Angel season three is on DVD on February 10!

Seuss spins in his grave.

I was possibly debating maybe seeing the live-action Cat In The Hat movie, until I read some reviews. Here are my favorite review quotes:

New York Times / A.O. Scott: A vulgar, uninspired lump of poisoned eye candy.

Boston Globe / Ty Burr: If the producers had dug up Ted Geisel's body and hung it from a tree, they couldn't have desecrated the man more.

Dallas Observer / Gregory Weinkauf: Such a remarkable rift between its charming source material and its heinous cinematic realization that the producers may as well have skipped the hassle of securing licensing rights and simply called this mess Mike Myers: Asshole in Fur.

Slate / David Edelstein: Like being run over by a garbage truck that backs up and dumps its load on top of you. It's a sloppy and vulgar burlesque, one of the most repulsive kiddie movies ever made.

Wall Street Journal / Joe Morgenstern: An abomination, impure and simple.

Metacritic is your friend. It's saved me from numerous awful movies, cued me in to some good ones, and helpfully lowered my expectations about a few more.

The Show-Stopper

I'm having trouble coming up with a really great gift for Laura. A lot of the gifts I give her are nice gifts, but maybe a little mundane. I give her things she specifically asks for, and I give her a lot of things that really wouldn't surprise her. So, I always try to think of some really different gift--something Laura's not expecting, or something that I think is perfect for her even though it's a little out of the ordinary for her. Not necessarily something expensive, just something nice and clever and thoughtful.

I've done pretty well in the past, but this year I'm having trouble thinking of something great. I've got a bunch of gift ideas, but none of them are the big WOW gift I'm looking for. We're on a tight budget for Christmas this year, so I've even put off shopping for the other gifts in case I think of a slightly-expensive Great Gift.

On the brighter side, here's my favorite gift-giving comic, from PVP Online.
